A Tale Of Redemption: Robert Downey Jr.’s Hard-Won Victory

My article this week at Return of Kings discusses the incredible personal story of actor Robert Downey Jr.  Many will recall that in the 1990s and early 2000s he was a poster child for wasted talent and misspent youth.  His life had begun to resemble a revolving door of court trips, blackouts, and mug shots, and there were few (if any) who would have laid odds on his survival, let alone the restoration of his career.  And so it appeared to be true.  Yet Downey clawed his way out of the abyss, in one of the most amazing recovery stories of recent years.  He now sits on top of the world, an A-list actor worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

How did this happen?  Find out more by reading the article here.

  1. For me, the moment that really defined Downey’s character was when he got up at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles and asked people to forgive Mel Gibson for his recent conduct. A lesser man would have distanced himself from Gibson in a selfish effort to protect himself, but Downey not only remained loyal, but in fact went beyond that and called on others to forgive him. The decision could have easily hurt his career, which had just recently rebounded. His speech, which can seen in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AAJuynxnTQ) touches on a lot of the things mentioned in your article. This is how real men respond when shown grace.
